My name is John P. Mills and I am a Lecturer in Sport Psychology and Coaching at the University of Essex in the  UK. I achieved a PhD from the University of Birmingham in 2015 and a degree in Psychology and Childhood Studies from the University of Suffolk in 2011. I am a British Psychological Society Chartered Psychologist (CPsychol) and member of the Division of Sport and Exercise Psychology. I am also an avid campaigner for changes in the academic publishing industry and in 2017, I founded SportRχiv: the World’s first open access subject repository for Sport, Exercise, Performance, and Health research.

My research specialisms are leadership ethics and moral development, while my primary methodological expertise lies in the indirect assessment of bias (i.e., implicit bias). My research currently focuses on the following questions:

  1. How and why coaches utilise specific coaching/leadership behaviours and the impact these behaviours have on their athletes. I am also interested in the role of person-coach fit.
  2. How coaches, teachers, parents and guardians can positively support children, adolescents and young people in their moral and life skill development (i.e., Positive Youth Development).
  3. How biases affect our perceptions and judgments when selecting and recruiting athletes or coaches. I am also interested in what can be done to limit their influence.
  4. How attitudes towards doping are formed, when such attitudes lead to doping behaviour, and what can be done to prevent doping.

Outside of academia, I have worked/consulted/consult for a range of Premier League and professional football clubs, sports organisations, charities, schools and colleges. During my ten years of working as an academy and community football coach, player development officer, multi-sports coach, and school sports teacher I have always followed the basic mantra that our role as coaches is to maximise the potential of our athletes as people as well as players. Although time does not permit me to work in applied settings as much as I would like, I am also happy to talk to sports organisations who shame my mission. I currently work with the players and coaching staff at three English Football League academies examining everything from talent identification, leadership in sport and coaching efficacy, through to moral development (i.e., character), but I would like to do more. I am passionate improving the lives and opportunities of children, adolescents and young people, so if you work for an organisation that supports these goals  — be it in sport or elsewhere and would like speak with me — please feel free to get in touch.
